The lawmaker, representing Nasarawa South in the Senate, Emmanuel Adokwe, has lamented the poor reading culture among Nigerian youths.

He stated this while receiving an award from the Nasarawa State chapter of the Association of Nigerian Authors in Abuja.

The senator also hailed ANA, saying the association is committed to promoting reading culture among Nigerians.

He said, “We will encourage any effort that will contribute to the growth of education and reading culture in our country. Reading is the main thing that can impact knowledge to people. You have to read first to acquire the knowledge in the material you are reading.

“Anybody that fails to read will remain ignorant. Reading is the fundamental way of improving communication skills in the young ones.”

He urged the ANA leadership not to give priority to profit-making books but to contribute to the body knowledge and to humanity.

Adokwe said, “I don’t accept awards but I consider this important and because of the passion I attach to the association that encourages reading culture in the young population and considering the fact that the state is one of the educationally disadvantaged in the country.”

The state ANA Chairman, Mr. Sumaila Umaisha, said the poor reading habits among the young population in the state, prompted the association to inaugurate the annual reading culture competition in the state.

According to Amstel Malta brand manager, Hannatu Ageni Yusuf, "The initiative came to life because the brand which has been the official sponsor of AMVCA since its inception in 2013, felt a need to encourage these Theatre Arts students who have done well in their academics and give them a tip of what to expect in their career paths”.

These fifteen students: Bare Mitchel Uzuajeme, Jesse Bankole .O, Aribisala Ayobami, Kalu Nnamdi, Korie Priscaline, Obi Okoli, Ode Isaiah, Uniloh Fidelia, Mudiaga Praise, Isong Mfoniso Effiong, Okiriguo Princewill Ehis, Faith Ibarakumo, Mark Jonathan Tukura, Okuku Precious and Nduka Omeje were selected across five prestigious institutions in the country: University of Lagos, University of Nigeria Nsukka, University of Port Harcourt, University of Benin and University of Abuja.

Kalu Nnamdi, a leading 400Level Theatre Arts student of the University of Nigeria Nsukka, expressed his delight at the invitation. He says,

“This is such an amazing opportunity coming on a platter of gold. It really came to me as a huge surprise. I have seen Amstel Malta’s involvement in the movie industry for a long time now and it feels really good to be one of the beneficiaries this time. I’m really eager to meet with the other students in my field and most importantly the very talented Genevieve. Sincerely, I really can’t wait”, he said.

In support of the fast growing Nollywood industry, which is currently the second biggest industry in the world, Amstel Malta will also be rewarding 4 award winners at the AMVCA with a million naira cash prize each: Best Male in a drama, Best Female in a drama, Best Movie-Drama and Overall Best Movie (Movie of the Year).

“This is one of the many ways the brand hopes to support the industry and encourage people to be the best they can be in their fields. First of, we decided to award winners of four AMVCA categories with a million naira cash prize each but then we thought it important to encourage those who aspire to make such feats in the future. The selection was strictly based on their academic performances, which we think deserve some form of commendation and reward’’, Hannatu adds.

In its quest to boost the quality of education available to our teeming Nigerian youths, Black Heritage Show Foundation, a non governmental organization has donated French books to five schools in Lagos which teach French Language.

The beneficiary schools include; Nic-Runnic Nursery and Primary School, Ojo, Holy Blessing Nursery and Primary School, Abule Egba, Queen Diana International, Nursery and Primary School, Oja-Oba, Chik Montessori Nursery and Primary School, Oja-Oba and A&T Nursery and Primary Schools, Agege.

Speaking at the book presentation to A&T Nursery and Primary Schools, Agege, Mr Louis Coyo who represented the Chairman of the Foundation, Rev Fr Francis Okpara said the gesture was born out of passion to promote French Language among students who are interested in the subject but lack basic fundamental books to grow. “We gave to these selected schools because they gave premium to French Language,” he said.

According to him, a lot of children are language illiterates in Nigeria which will not help them to fully represent Nigeria in the nearest future. He lamented a situation where some of our diplomats travel to francophone countries and can not address their audience in French Language. “This is a minus to us as a country,” he added. Some of these people in these smaller francophone countries who come to Nigeria, he noted, express themselves also in English, Nigerians should be able to do the same when they go there. These, he added, will enable us have a place in the comity of nations.

Prison inmates to sit for 2015 UTME

The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board has said that 1,475,477 candidates will sit for this year’s Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examinations scheduled for between March 10 and 21.

Among the candidates are 208 prison inmates and 192 visually impaired candidates. The prison inmates are from Kaduna and Ikoyi prisons.

The JAMB Registrar, Prof. Dibu Ojerinde, who announced this in Abuja on Thursday, however, noted the number of candidates writing the examination this year dropped when compared to that of 2014.

He stated that 1,632,172 candidates sat for the examination in 2014.

The registrar, who said the examination would hold in 400 centres in Nigeria and in seven overseas countries, also noted that Imo State recorded 104, 381 candidates, the highest applicants from the states this year.

Delta State came second with 78,854 candidates while Anambra State came third with 77,689 candidates.

Three North-east states, Borno, Adamawa and Yobe, have 15,692, 15,613 and 10,044 candidates in that order.

Ojerinde, who attributed the decline in the number of applications to insecurity in some parts of the country, added that the CBT platform also eliminated multiple registrations by the candidates.
